Rejected candidates (not kept)
| Candidate | Why rejected |
|---|---|
| Wei CZ et al. (2026) / Dong R et al. (2026) figures | From a different page's sourcing; not relevant to atavism |
| Wikimedia Commons choanoflagellate / Capsaspora micrographs (image search results) | Licenses unclear or CC BY-SA (share-alike excluded); no verifiably CC0/CC-BY specimen found |
| iNaturalist / microscopy-forum choanoflagellate images | Unknown or incompatible licenses; not cited papers |
| TRACERx lung cancer papers (PMCID: PMC10115649, CC BY, cited in review) | Figures are phylogeny diagrams and charts only; no micrographs or gene-age content relevant here |
| PMC11057133 (metazoan gene regulatory networks, CC BY, cited) | Network/co-expression heatmaps overlap the two kept sources; kept sources cover the same evidence more directly |
Notes
- The atavism review's cited literature is dominated by genomic/phylostratigraphic analyses; the real evidence base is computational, so the graphics use published figures from those analyses rather than fabricated micrographs. Both kept papers are explicitly about the unicellular/multicellular gene-age hypothesis.
- If the site displays these, include the attribution lines printed on the graphics adjacent to each image.
